If-then plans

Psychologist Peter Gollwitzer spent decades studying 'implementation intentions': plans shaped as 'if situation X, then I do Y'. Across hundreds of studies it's one of the better-replicated tricks in behavior change: people who pre-decide the trigger AND the response follow through far more often than people who just 'intend to do better'. 'I'll be disciplined' is a wish. 'If price hits €95, then I sell everything at market' is a plan.

What you get asked

  1. Match the trigger to its pre-decided response

Each pair welds a specific situation to a specific action. When the trigger fires, the plan runs. The emotion never gets a vote.

  2. WHY does the if-then format work so much better than 'I'll try harder'?

The hard thinking happens in advance, in calm. In the moment there's nothing left to decide, only something to execute.

  3. 'I'll be more disciplined' is a wish; 'if I hit my stop, then I ___' is a plan.

The other three options are exactly what League 1's hope demon does when there's no plan on file. Specific trigger, specific action.

  4. Which of these is a REAL if-then plan?

A real if-then names a checkable trigger and a doable action. 'Something bad' and 'respond appropriately' are blank cheques your demons will happily fill in.

  5. Your rule fired: two losses, day over. But you feel totally FINE, and a beautiful setup just appeared. Now what?

League 1's tilt lesson applies: the tilted trader is always the last to know. The rule was written precisely because in-the-moment-you can't referee this call. 🐜
