Chapter · Master Solana
What Solana is
Solana is a public blockchain, a shared computer that anyone can use and nobody fully owns. Its whole goal is to be fast and cheap. Where some networks charge dollars per action and take minutes, Solana aims for tiny fees and roughly half-second confirmations. It launched its main network in 2020 and was designed by Anatoly Yakovenko, with Solana Labs and the Solana Foundation supporting it.

What this lesson covers
Why speed matters
If a payment or a trade costs a few cents and settles in under a second, you can build apps that feel normal to everyday users. That is the bet Solana makes. The tradeoff is that going this fast is hard, and later lessons will be honest about where that has caused trouble, including network outages and a flood of risky memecoins.
What you get asked
Your friend wants to send $5 to each of 40 people in a group, one payment apiece, and asks which chain keeps fees from eating the money. Why does Solana fit the job?
Cheap, fast, many: that is Solana's whole design bet. Forty tiny payments cost cents in total, which is exactly the workload it was built for.
In what year did Solana launch its main network?
Solana's mainnet beta went live in 2020. The idea and first paper came a few years earlier, but 2020 is when the live network began.
Solana was designed by Anatoly ___, whose background in high-speed systems shaped its focus on raw performance.
Anatoly Yakovenko came from a hardware and telecom background. That engineering mindset is why Solana leans so hard on squeezing out maximum throughput.
The group chat says: 'Solana is basically a company app. If it goes down, support can just move your coins back.' What is wrong with that?
A public chain has validators, not an owner with an undo button. Outages can pause the network, but nobody can reach in and move your coins for you. That is the trade you accept for owning them directly.
