Chapter · Master Hyperliquid

What Hyperliquid is

Hyperliquid is a high-performance exchange for perpetual futures (perps), the leveraged bet on where a price is heading. What makes it unusual: it runs on its own blockchain (an L1) and keeps a real order book on-chain, not an automated formula. You trade from your own wallet and keep your own keys, so no company holds your coins. Think of the speed of Binance with the self-custody of a wallet.

What you get asked

  1. What does 'non-custodial' mean for a Hyperliquid trader?

Non-custodial means the keys stay with you. There is no company vault holding your balance, which removes one classic failure point but hands you full responsibility.

  2. How is Hyperliquid different from a typical AMM-based perps platform?

An AMM prices trades from a liquidity pool formula. Hyperliquid runs a genuine order book: your order sits next to other traders' orders and gets matched, like a professional exchange.

  3. Match each venue to how it works

Hyperliquid blends two worlds: the order-book matching of a CEX with the self-custody of holding your own wallet. That combination is the whole pitch.

  4. Running a full order book on a blockchain is hard because it needs very fast, cheap ___ for every order and cancel.

Books update constantly as traders place and cancel orders. Most chains are too slow or too expensive for that, which is why an on-chain book is rare and technically demanding.

  5. Why is an on-chain central limit order book considered unusual and difficult to build?

A live book churns through thousands of orders and cancels. Doing that on-chain with near-instant finality is a real engineering feat, which is why most DEXs chose the simpler AMM route. 🐜
