Chapter · Master Coinbase

Buying your first crypto

Coinbase gives you two ways to buy. The simple Buy button is one tap and beginner-proof, but it carries a higher fee baked into the price. Advanced Trade is a real order book: it looks busier, yet the fees are meaningfully lower, often a fraction of a percent. The same €1,000 of bitcoin can cost you several euros more through the simple flow than through Advanced Trade. Learning the second door is one of the highest-value moves a beginner can make.

What you get asked

  1. What is the main difference between a market order and a limit order?

A market order prioritises speed: it takes whatever price is available right now. A limit order prioritises price: it only fills at the level you set, or better, and may not fill at all.

  2. For lower fees on Coinbase, use ___ Trade instead of the one-tap simple buy.

The simple Buy button is convenient but pricier. Advanced Trade uses a real order book with much lower fees. The interface is busier, but the savings are real on every purchase.

  3. You buy €1,000 of bitcoin at a 0.6% fee. Roughly how many euros is the fee?

0.6% of €1,000 is 1000 x 0.006 = €6. Small on one buy, but fees repeat on every trade, so a lower rate compounds in your favour over time.

  4. Match each order or route to what it gives you

Convenience and cost pull in opposite directions. Once you are comfortable, Advanced Trade with a limit order gives you the most control for the least fee.

  5. Why does the fee difference between simple buys and Advanced Trade matter over time?

One buy hides the cost, but a regular investor makes many. Paying 0.6% instead of a fraction of that, over and over, quietly drags on returns. Cheaper rails compound. 🐜
