Chapter · Master Base
OP Stack and the Superchain
Rather than build a whole rollup from zero, Base was built using the OP Stack. The OP Stack is a free, open-source kit made by the team behind Optimism, another well known Layer 2. It gives builders the standard parts needed to launch a rollup. By using it, Coinbase could ship Base faster and share improvements with a wider community. Many chains now run on the same shared design, which makes them work more alike and play nicely together.

What this lesson covers
The Superchain
Because Base and other chains use the same OP Stack, they can join a shared network of chains called the Superchain. The goal is for these chains to feel like one connected system, with easier movement of assets and messages between them over time. Think of it like a group of cities that agree on the same road signs and rail gauge, so travel between them is smoother. Base is one of the largest members of this growing group.
What you get asked
What is the OP Stack?
The OP Stack is open-source software from the Optimism team. Base used it to launch instead of building every piece alone.
Base was built using the OP Stack, an open-source kit created by the team behind ___.
The OP Stack comes from Optimism. Base adopted it, which is why Base and Optimism share so much of the same design.
What is the Superchain?
The Superchain is a set of OP Stack chains, including Base, designed to connect and interoperate as if they were one network.
Match each name to what it is.
Optimism built the OP Stack. Chains like Base use it, and together they form the Superchain.
